Bonaventure, Inc. Was founded in 1877 at 2-4 Barclay Street in the old Astor House by l\\/ir. Edmond F. Bonaventure, one of the famous bibliophiles of his time. L\\/ir. Bonaventure, an engineer born in Alsace, fought in the franco-prussian \\var, and coming to America as a conse quence of the German annexation began the practice of his profes sion here. But the panic of 1873 diverted his interests from engi neering to the occupation which had always been his hobby, the collecting of books, and he established the store on Barclay Street which became known to the generation of I. P. L\\/iorgan, Robert Hoe and Henry \\valters - all of whom were among his customers as the Maison Bonaventure. He specialized in period literature, in bindings, in line prints, in paintings, and in rare objets d'art. On the death of ivir. Bonaventure in 1918, one year after the incorporation of the firm, he was succeeded by his son Edmond C. Bonaventure, who carried on and extended his father's business.
